Sammanfattning
In high-income countries today, mortality is closely related to ageing. Thus, public health efforts require an understanding of the ageing process. The human body consists of a number of vital subsystems, each with considerable redundancy. Errors accumulate randomly in all subsystems. A subsystem does not break down until a critical level of errors has been reached. Accordingly, public health efforts ought to try to reduce the rate of error accumulation. Two approaches are promising. One is health promotion, e.g. increase of physical activity, which might affect mortality by lowering the rate of failure accumulation. The second is improved condition during the fetal period and early childhood, which might result in a lower number of errors at the start of life.
