Sammanfattning
The background of this study was an evaluation of a three-year housing project for persons with substance abuse and mental health problems in a Norwegian community. The participants had unstable housing situations at the outset of the project. They participated in the building of small houses, which they later moved into. The aim of the study was to illuminate, describe and interpret experiences of creating a home for persons with substance abuse and mental health problems. The study had a qualitative, explorative design. Content analysis of the interviews unearthed a predominant theme: a respectable life. Five other themes were subsequently identified: the joy inherent in having a home; safety and predictability; being included; a sense of responsibility; and feelings of community and solidarity. The outcome of the study was that the participants perceived that they had a life that was considered respectable, by both themselves and others. The house provided a sense of dignity, not previously experienced. The findings contribute insight into how persons with substance abuse and mental health problems possess the will and ability to create a positive change and a homely environment, when they have the opportunity to housing and support in daily life. The participants embarked on a path towards becoming friends, family members, neighbours and citizens.
