Sammanfattning

In planning housing and supportive housing within mental health service, we need to know how the users themselves experience living in their own homes. The purpose of this paper is to present and summarise findings from qualitative studies within this research field. A search strategy in relevant databases was developed to identify relevant articles. Fifteen studies were included, and the findings were categorised under the following themes: Wishes and needs related to having a home; Positive experiences of living in your own home; and Challenges connected to living in one’s own home. Findings reveal that individuals with long-standing mental health problems wish to live in their own home in a normal neighbourhood. They want a housing situation that is safe, with possibilities of autonomy, control and a degree of predictability. Furthermore, they want access to health professionals when needed. To have a home of one’s own facilitates contact with friends and family, and contributes to health and quality of life. These findings seem to support the ‘Housing First’ model and can be supportive in planning for ongoing and new housing projects.
