Sammanfattning

The study is a survey of the number of drugs per patient related to the number of prescribing doctors per patient for all individuals with multi-dose dispensing in Sweden in 2010. For patients 80 years and older (80+) the number of different drugs dispensed correlated strongly with an increasing number of prescribing doctors per patient. The percentage of patients 80+ with drugs, which according to guidelines are considered to be inappropriate for elderly, correlated strongly with an increasing number of prescribers per patient. The percentage of patients 80+ with drug combinations known to cause severe drug-drug interactions correlated strongly with an increasing number of prescribers per patient. An increasing number of prescribers per patient was associated with a lower quality of drug therapy. The quality of drug therapy was lower for patients 80+ in their private homes as compared to patients in nursing homes.
