Sammanfattning

Background: Malnutrition is an underestimated problem for surgical patients, and the Danish Health and Medicines Authority prioritizes systematic screening of nutritional status. Purpose: The aim of this study is to examine how nursing staff experience working with screening of nutritional status and conducting diet plans to improve the practice of patients’ nutritional needs. Method: Two focus group interviews between nursing leaders and nursing staff were held. Results: The following six themes arose: Screening of nutritional status improves nursing practice, but it is not consistent. When diet registration does not work. Nutrition must be a procedure just like medication and giving the patient a bedpan. Interdisciplinary collaboration. Categorization of the patient. Audit is necessary. Conclusion: Nursing staff experience difficulties and lack of consistency in carrying out screening of nutritional status and diet registration. It is a dilemma whether clinical practice should be based on research knowledge only, and exclude the clinical judgement as a consequence.
