Sammanfattning

This article comes as a result based on the effects of mapping utilities developed at Borgestadklinikken: a Blue Cross institution in Norway and part of the specialized public health system in Norway. The purpose of this mapping utility is to be able to identify children’s suffering and risks in families at an early stage in cases where one or both parents abuse drugs. The Healthcare laws charges healthcare personnel with mapping and identifying such children. The study explores the experiences of the use of mapping utilities by professionals employed in specialist-healthcare services, and is based on qualitative interviews. The findings in this study show that there were both assets and drawbacks entailed in the use of standardized mapping-utilities, although suggests that using mapping–utilities does not promote the child`s perspective. Standardization of mapping-utilities is discussed in the light of Hans Skjervheim’s theory, «The Instrumentalist Mistake». Finally some thoughts are presented concerning the application of this knowledge in the development of such work-utilities, which identify children’s suffering and assess risks in families where parents abuse drugs.
