Sammanfattning
Studies show that registered nurses are uncertain about their clinical competence, which, among other factors, implies the development of a clinical gaze. Aim: The aim of this study was to describe how nursing students experienced the development of a clinical gaze. Design and method: Qualitative interview study with a phenomenographic approach. Six nursing students, 23-40 years old, in their final semester. Findings: The nursing students had a common understanding of what a clinical gaze implies. The clinical gaze was, however, perceived differently in the fields of general medicine and surgery, psychiatry, and community health care. The students described that their clinical gaze has developed during their education. Natural sciences and medicine were emphasized as fundamental prerequisites to develop a clinical gaze. Subjects such as nursing theory, philosophy of science and history were described as relatively irrelevant. The informants requested stricter demands concerning participation in classes and exams, and stated that their own enthusiasm and desire to learn are prerequisites for the development of clinical gaze. Conclusion: Clinical gaze is about «the whole» and a conception of coherence. This was described as something more than physical observations. The basis of developing this competence is the students’ motivation and their experiences during clinical practice.
