Sammanfattning
Depression, anxiety disorders, psychotic disorders, and substance use disorders are common among elderly and are more frequent than dementia disorders.
Depression is the most common of the psychiatric disorders and leads to both reduced life quality and increased risk of somatic disorders. Depression is associated with increased mortality, especially due to higher death risk in somatic disorders.
Anxiety disorders are often seen as an increased worry and they have a high comorbidity with depression. Although psychotic symptoms are frequent they are seldom mentioned spontaneously. The use of alcohol has increased in the elderly with an increased risk of abuse.
The diagnostic criteria for pshychiatric diseases are not adapted to the elderly, which induces problems in the diagnoses both with regard to separation of different disorders and to normal psychological reactions.
