Aim: The aim of this study was to illuminate the transition to parenthood among mothers with depressive symptoms 2-3 months after birth.
Background: Becoming a mother is a process including feelings of satisfaction and love, responsibility and changed relationships. About of
11-17% new mothers suffer from depressive symptoms. Transition theory describes the nature of the transition, the transition conditions and
the patterns of response.
Methods: Semi structured interviews with 22 mothers with depressive symptoms analyzed with template analysis style according to Meleis
transition theory.
Findings: The mothers went through several transitions and their life changed physically and mentally. The first meeting with the child was
overwhelming. Mother's own beliefs, the child, partner, family and friends and the health care staff affected transition. Factors describing the
process of being a mother were reflections about the situation and coping strategies.
Conclusion: Becoming a mother takes time and effort. Suffering with depressive symptoms makes the situation more difficult. These mothers
need social and professional support as follow up of the transition process. Transition theory can assist the nurse to understand mothers’
readiness for parenthood and identify factors that influence the process.
