Sammanfattning

The pattern of poisoning in children during 2010 is described and compared with the results observed 10 and 20 years earlier. Case records, data from the Poisons Information Centre (PC) statistics of inquiries and from the Swedish national inpatient register regarding children <10 years were analyzed. Most children developed none or mild symptoms, and moderate symptoms and severe poisonings were rare. The pattern is the same as observed in analyses performed in 1990 and 2000. Between 1990 and 2010, the number of children hospitalized due to poisoning accidents decreased by more than two thirds. It is suggested that the PC plays an important role in this positive trend through preventive work with authorities, manufacturers and information to the public. Moreover, the availability of a more comprehensive and quality assured database has reduced the need for hospitalization as a precautionary measure.
