Sammanfattning

Experience and previous research indicate that many children have parents with alcohol problems. The studies highlight how this implies living under severe encumbrance, which may cause lifelong difficulties. Autobiographies written by those who have parents with alcohol problems portray a more compound picture in which the process of the relationships become prominent. Based on a qualitative study, the article shows how autobiographical writers convey personal experiences, how they have acquired insight from their relationships with mothers or fathers who have alcohol problems, and how they have been shaped by these relationships. The findings show that the informants have been carriers of their parent’s problems, but dialogue and reflection have been helpful to enable them to separate their own world of experiences from their parents’. A conclusion is that three phases illustrate this process: 1) the stage of theatre, where the problems are hidden, 2) the stage of secession, where the informants dissociated themselves from their parents, and 3) the stage of sincerity, where the respondents adopted a more open and nuanced image of their parents and the experiences.
