Sammanfattning

This paper discusses inpatient treatment in mental health care. Reports published by Norwegian health care authorities demonstrate considerable variation in the use of inpatient treatment, both between health care systems and between community mental health centres within the same health system. There is great variation in the number of bed days according to the population served and the distribution of bed days between hospital wards and community mental health centres. These reports, and the use of inpatient treatment at one single community mental health centre by way of illustration, indicate that the discrepancies are not due to differences between catchment areas or patient characteristics.
