Today, there are approximately 150 Danish nurses who have obtained a Ph.D. Increasingly, Danish research results are being published, contributing to the development of the nursing profession and laying the foundation for an evidence-based practice. Despite this, only a small number of the country's hospital departments employs nurses who are trained in research. This article presents the experiences, collected through focus group interviews, of some of the first nursing officers to hire research-trained nurses in clinical practice. Their expectations have most definitely been met, in that the hiring of nurses with research training has helped renew professional pride, inspiration and energy among the nurses in the clinic, and the department has gained a clearer professional profile, as the nursing officers have gained a highly qualified professional sparring partner. The nursing officers conclude that the hiring of nurses trained in research clearly benefits the nurses, the organisation and the leader.
