Sammanfattning

Background: Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato complex comprise a number of Borrelia species related to Lyme Borreliosis (LB). Three of the human pathogenic species, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto, Borrelia afzelii and Borrelia garinii are common in Europe. Human LB infection is a complex disease and the different Borrelia species display different clinical manifestations. Materials and methods: The study is based on search in PubMed (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/) and global MLST databases (http://www.mlst.net/and http://pubmlst.org/). Search keywords; "MLST, Borrelia, Genetics, Taxonomy, Host, Evolution, Lyme". The majority of authors of the articles used are working in the major research groups that study Borrelia-MLST worldwide. Discussion: Borrelia taxonomy is in continual development and multilocus sequence typing (MLST) is one of the methods used for genetic characterization of Borrelia species. MLST is an analysis tool that provides results comparable worldwide through an online database (borrelia.mlst.net). The method is based on a set of strict criteria, which have to be met in order for the MLST to be applied in taxonomy and evolutionary studies. MLST has demonstrated a great diversity among Borrelia strains. Research indicates that the diversity among Borrelia strains can be related to determinants such as host and geographic origin.
