Sammanfattning
The Window of Tolerance model has its origin in developmental psychology, as a term for the
individuals' optimal zone of activation. A crucial caregiving task during early childhood is to provide
other-regulation, i.e. to regulate the infant back into the Window of Tolerance when activation is too
high or low. Along with neurobiological research which shows how important sensitive
otherregulation is for building the brain's capacity for stress tolerance, the window of tolerance has
become a useful model in trauma psychology as well. Not the least, it has become central to the
understanding and treatment of functional problems associated with adverse childhood experiences.
In this article we propose a definition of developmental trauma as sustained or repeated exposure to
traumatic stress combined with deficient other-regulation during childhood. We argue that the
Window of Tolerance model can make it easier for involved services to gather around a shared
understanding and common goals for interventions.
