Sammanfattning

Impacts of developmental trauma are commonly conceptualised in terms of regulation problems. The «window of tolerance»-model illustrates these problems as a «narrow» window of tolerance, where hyper- or hypoactivation are easily triggered in response to potential threat. These problems are suggested to be related to exposure to severe stress in childhood in combination with absence of caregivers’ other-regulation of affects, resulting in underdevelopment of the child’s neural capacity for self- and affect regulation. In this paper, we explain how Stephen Porges’ «polyvagal theory» supports this perspective, and how it casts light on the physiological and evolutionary based underpinnings of affect regulation problems commonly observed in developmentally traumatised children. We also discuss how the theory can enable us to better understand and help these children.
