Sammanfattning

The last 20 to 30 years are characterized by societal shifts such as the emergence and further development of consumer society and third-wave feminism, and, in the field of health policy, an increasing interest in groups at risk. In this article, some of these shifts are discussed in relation to Swedish alcohol culture, with a particular focus on research on youth, gender, and sexuality. To summarize, research shows that norms and meanings related to alcohol vary among groups of women and men (e.g., based on age and sexual identity). At the same time, the notion that it is more problematic for women to drink exists side by side with the notion that women today "drink like men" and the notion of drinking as a project related to women’s liberation and freedom of choice. Although fewer studies analyze masculinity and alcohol, some studies indicate that the construction of masculinity takes place in a field of tensions between a "laddish" ideal where alcohol is associated with "toughnes" and less clearly gendered ideals that emphasize fatherhood, creativity and weakness.
