Sammanfattning

Alcohol causes mortality, morbidity and social problems. Especially the social factor necessitates limitation of the consumption. Most alcohol related problems are found in men, e.g. is the mortality rate more than three times higher. In addition, men cause vastly more problems associated with alcohol, e.g. drunk driving and violence. Despite these facts, it is women that have been focused as a group of increased risk when it comes to alcohol consumption. When prevention programs or treatment programs are launched, is not wise to primarily focus on one of the genders, but primarily to focus on the consumption of alcohol as such. The genders are quite similar when it concerns alcohol, and the differences are small. It is often claimed that it is necessary to focus on women as that group is undertreated, but there is no substantial proof supporting that as the group statement. More important is that the resources for treatment of women, as well as of men, with alcohol problems, are insufficient.
