Sammanfattning

In the article two practitioners, both with extensive experience in addiction treatment in Sweden are interviewed on the development of women's alcohol treatment facilities in the early 1980s and how gender-specific treatment originated. In summary, today the focus has moved away from having gender-specific treatment for the majority of patients to focusing on certain subgroups of women, which are thought to benefit from gender-specific care. This applies particularly to pregnant addicted women and women with experience of trauma or psychological, physical and sexual violence. It is important to emphasize that the treatment staff always, regardless of treatment modality, should employ a gender perspective. One of the reasons for this is that it is easy for both men and women to adopt certain gender roles that complicate treatment and that woman sometimes get trapped in mixed gender groups.
