Sammanfattning
The aim of this article was to examine the received referrals to the Department of Clinical
Dentistry - Pediatric Dentistry for the age group 0 - 18-year olds. The study period was from January
2006 to June 2013. Totally 333 referrals were received, but 76 were not included due to various
exclusion criteria. Many background factors for referrals were registered. Eighty percent originated
from the county Hordaland which during 2012, only referred 0.03 % of the child and adolescent
population to specialists in pediatric dentistry. Eighty-four percent of the referrals were from dentists
working in public dental service. The number of referrals declined as the distance to the Department
of Clinical Dentistry - Pediatric Dentistry, UiB, increased. Mineralization disturbances and traumatic
dental injuries were most frequently referred. Although the number of referrals increased at the end of
the period, a much lower number of referrals were received than the literature refers to (about 1 %) as
the annual dental treatment need for pediatric service in the child and adolescent population
