Sammanfattning

The paper discusses problems related to the use of standard assessment-procedures when evaluating Attention Deficit Hyperacitivy Disorder and autism spectrum disorders among deaf children. Deaf children as a group perform poorer than hearing children on tests of attention, working memory, cognitive flexibility, self-regulation, impulse control and theory of mind. This is likely due to the children’s adaptation to the loss of a sense, but also to more restricted access to an environment that supports cognitive and social development. Implications for clinical practice are discussed.
