Sammanfattning
According to new Norwegian laws employees in mental healthcare for adults are obligated to
assess patients’ children and to act on their children's needs. Modern implementation theory is an
important tool to understand and reinforce change of clinical practice in this field. In light of this, the
purpose of the present study is to evaluate to what extent professionals register children of mentally
ill parents in the electronic patient journals. The participants in the study were all patients admitted to
a general Psychiatric Clinic in Northern Norway in January 2013. Very few patients are registered
with minor children. With the current speed of implementation it will take approximately 19 years
before patients’ children are identified the way they should according to the new laws. The
implementation of new clinical practice to safeguard children of mentally ill patients is coming along
very slowly. Different suggestions of how to speed up the implementation process are discussed.
