Sammanfattning
The outpatient mental health services in an area in North Western
Stockholm have during almost ten years participated in the development and
use of a manual for an interview according to the cultural formulation in DSMIV.
In this article I describe my experiences of encounters with patients with a
different cultural background and of conversations about culture. Furthermore,
I give some examples and anonymized patient vignettes illustrating how the
cultural formulation is useful in that work, for increased understanding and
improved treatment alliance, for improved diagnostics and support to patients
in their rehabilitation.
