Sammanfattning
One aim for this qualitative study was to identify and describe patterns in the mediators’
approaches to the parents in severe conflicts attached to the break-up. And further more to identify
approaches that seemed to keep the parties in dialogues with each other, and approaches that
seemed to end them. Qualitative analyses of audiotaped dialogues from 28 high-conflict cases
identified five dimensions, each representing contrasts in how the mediators met the parents during
the process. They are labeled: Focus on the law and regulations versus the parents themselves, the
mediator defining subjects to talk about versus asking the parents, agreement oriented work versus a
focus on emotional an relational reactions, verbally versus written orientation, limited versus rich
time space, and parent focus versus system focus. Each dimension can also be seen as a space that
the mediator has to use with flexibility, and over time, in order help the parents and their children to
reorient and make decisions in an emotional difficult time. In summing up the experiences from the
study, and with a special address to practitioners handling family conflicts, seven central strategies
are highlighted.
