Sammanfattning
In recent years the need to enhance the quality of nursing education has been highlighted and
discussed in Norway. The goal is to educate independent, responsible, reflective and patient-oriented
nurses. In Norway 50 % of nursing education takes place in clinical practice. The students learn
nursing in direct contact with patients under the supervision of nurses. In our study, nursing students
was interviewed after a 10-week practice period in medical or surgery care. They were asked to
account a situation where they experienced that they learned nursing. The aim is to identify which
situations nursing students consider important for their learning, what they learn in these situations,
and what is important for their learning. The results show that students learn nursing through
interaction with patients in many different situations, and through experience and taking
responsibility for nursing activities to the patient. The students consider their own as well as other
nurses’ approaches, actions and attitude when meeting the patients. The students need help from
their supervisors to take full advantage of the learning situations that practice allows.
