Sammanfattning

The aim of this study was to develop an empirically based theory concerning the cohabitants’ and health care professionals' expectations to the content of the conversation in the outpatient respiratory medical clinic. Participation of cohabitants is today immensely important in the Western health-care system. At the same time there seems to be a lack of knowledge regarding their needs and expectations during the clinical encounter. The study is based on Kathy Charmaz' social constructivist interpretation of Grounded Theory. The study includes a total of 48 participants: 14 partners, 14 patients and 20 health professionals. Data have been collected through 19 field observations in three hospital based outpatient respiratory medical clinics in Denmark, and 14 patient/partner interviews and 11 interviews with health professionals including one focus group interview. A main concern appeared through conflicting expectations as to what the counselling could include. It often led to discord in the interaction. The cohabitants strove to be engaged in evolving conversations, while the healthcare professionals strove to maintain a formalised agenda. The findings of this study point out the need to develop specific models targeted the time defined outpatient interaction that strengthens clinical practice, based on an individual organized guidance, stimulating conversations and emotional recognition of the patients and cohabitants.
