Sammanfattning

Over the past decades the interest among dental professionals world wide to treat patients with sleep related breathing disorders, in particular obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, has increased markedly. The total number of mandibular advancement splints fitted to patients has indeed increased even in Norway during the past 7 - 8 years. The clinical experience and level of knowledge among Norwegian dentists is, however, in general still modest. The purpose of this review was to provide an update on the issue of OSAS in general for Norwegian dentists, including pathophysiology, diagnosis, alternative treatment modalities, recommended treatment protocol, oral appliance design, mode of action and possible side effects. Thereby also providing an understanding of how the dentist can participate in the treatment of the OSAS-patient in close collaboration with specialist sleep physicians. Established routines for available financial support for patients in the Norwegian health system as of today are also outlined.
