Sammanfattning

t is well known that obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) can cause a variety of systemic diseases and that comorbidities such as various cardiovascular diseases and diabetes occur more frequently in patients with OSAS compared with the general population. Dentists can play an important role both in identifying patients with OSAS and by referring them to a sleep specialist physician. The aim of this survey was to investigate the level of knowledge among Norwegian dentists on the subject of OSAS and to examine their experience in treating patients with OSAS. A total of 167 questionnaires were answered by dentists in Oslo and Tromsø. The results showed that 74 % of the respondents recognized OSAS as a potentially life-threatening condition. 18 % did not know that mandibular advancement splint is a good treatment option for some OSAS patients. Only 20 % of the participants had ever consulted a physician when suspecting OSAS in their patients and 12 % had fitted an oral appliance not collaborating with a sleep specialist. Only 1 % of the participants had participated in more than 10 lectures/seminars on OSAS, while 61 % had never attended a lecture or a seminar on the subject. Results show that there is a need for more education and training in dental sleep medicine and an increased need for interdisciplinary collaboration between dentists, general practitioners and sleep specialists in the treatment of patients with OSAS.
