Sammanfattning
The article describes advances in, and use of, telemedicine within the Greenlandic health
service. The Greenlandic model for the use of telemedicine differs a good deal from that in other
countries, in that usage is centred around the part of the care pathway which in continental Europe is
typically provided in hospital. In Greenland, telemedicine is used end to end in the patient pathway,
meaning from assessment, through diagnostics, to follow-up. This is due to personnel competence
and geographical factors.
Telemedicine is employed both internally within the Greenlandic health service, and vis-à-vis
partners who provide healthcare to patients in Greenland.
Telemedicine is conducive to more equitable access to health services, especially for citizens in the
most remote areas, because they gain access to specialists without any costly transport, while the
waiting time for consultations is likewise reduced. In addition, the quality of healthcare is raised in
terms of improved clinical assessment, fewer tests and consultations and more rapid diagnostics
and treatment.
