Introduction: Dignity is a basic need for human beings and a core value in
nursing. It is of vital importance to possess an inner sense of dignity, especially
for elderly patients. Purpose and aim: The purpose of this study is to shed light
on how elderly patients express their need to maintain their own dignity during
their stay in hospital. Increased awareness of this topic will make it easier for
healthcare professionals to recognize these expressions and respond to them.
Method: This is a qualitative study with a explorative/descriptive design, using
a hermeneutic approach. Data were collected using a semi-structured interview
of elderly patients with hip fracture. The interviews were analyzed using
systematic text condensation. Results: The respondents’ need to maintain their
own sense of dignity was expressed via the mention of values that the patients
felt it important to live by. These values were: independence, roles of
responsibility and caring, and orderliness. Conclusions: Being allowed to
express these values, having them reaffirmed and being helped to live by them,
helped the respondents to maintain their dignity. Thus, the respondents’
expressions become requests that healthcare professionals must respond and
act according to.
