Ottawa Charter was adopted 30 years ago in Canada. In this leading article the basic ideas of the Ottawa Conference 1986 are presented. The emergence and impact is discussed in a 10-, 20- and 25 year perspective. The starting point is some articles written by key actors at the international WHO conferences on Health Promotion. They have over the years been key facilitators for the international Health Promotion development. The conferences have been important because they have introduced strategies for the Healthy Public Policy agenda, and have also been creative engines for policies for improved health both within countries and in organizations. These conferences have since the Ottawa conference 1986 provided new concepts, principles and action areas and placed Health Promotion into a global context. The 9 th international health promotion conference in Shanghai have as it´s theme "Health Promotion in the Sustainable Development Goals".
