Sammanfattning

The purpose of this paper was to examine to what extent intentional and functional explanations of mental problems support the use of a model-confirming approach as a means of developing clinical expertise. Intentional explanations, that is, accounts of actions and emotions by reference to wants and beliefs, cannot be a part of articulated models of processing and behavior, and, consequently, clinical predictions that can lead to disconfirmation of the model cannot be derived. By contrast, functional explanations, that is, accounts of actions and emotions in terms of their functional constituents and the way they are organized, represent articulated models and support a model- disconfirming approach, thus facilitating therapists’ learning and development of expertise.
