Sammanfattning
Introduction: Occupational therapists working
in community settings are an important and rapidly
growing health care profession. However, little is
known about the challenges they face in their everyday
practice. The aim of this paper was to investigate
the challenges occupational therapists working in
Norwegian municipalities experience when they are
working with clients and other health care personnel.
Material and method: 48 occupational therapists
from 12 Norwegian municipalities participated in group
discussions during the first stage of a Delphi-investigation.
133 written descriptions of experiences of challenges
were analysed.
Results: A content analysis of the material revealed
three intertwining themes that describe the challenges
the occupational therapists experienced:
1) It is difficult to communicate occupational therapy
competence, 2) Others’ expectations toward occupational therapy
does not match the occupational therapists understanding,
and 3) Interdisciplinary work may be inhibited by the organisation
of the services.
Although more research is needed, the results show
that occupational therapists could benefit from continuing
to strengthen their professional identity. However,
to enhance the quality of interdisciplinary work,
other health care personnel must also acknowledge
the competence and knowledge offered by the occupational
therapists.
