Sammanfattning
Ten years have passed since the guideline about suicide coverage in
the Code of Ethics of the Norwegian Press.
From having a guideline warning journalists not to mention suicide,
the new guideline from 2016 was: Be cautious when reporting on
suicide and attempted suicide. Avoid reporting that is not necessary for
meeting a general need for information. Avoid description of methods or
other matters that may contribute to provoking further suicidal actions.
The article presents 12 stories about suicide considered by the
Norwegian Press Complaints Commission between 2006 and 2016. In
nine of the stories the Press Complaints Commission concluded that
the medias had violated the Code of Ethics.
The article presents also a number of other controversial stories
about suicide and stories that provides hope and openness. There is
not much research on the Norwegian media coverage of suicide, but a
research project commissioned by the Norwegian Union of Journalists
in 2007 concluded that Norwegian media often refer to suicide in a
superficial way. Based on the review and having followed the Norwegian
media coverage of suicide close for 15 years, it is the author’s impression
that Norwegian media mainly discusses the topic in a responsible,
careful manner. There are few violations. The author suggests a debate
about the suicide coverage guideline in the Code of Ethics.
