Background: Suicide-related media content that is socially beneficial
holds in accordance to the Norwegian media guidelines on suicide
reporting information about ways to seek help, risk factors and offers
hope. Media reporting, which in accordance to the Code of Ethics
of the Norwegian Press avoids information about suicide method is
socially beneficial.
Purpose: To study whether suicide-related media content from 2014 is
in accordance to the Norwegian Code of Ethics and media guidelines
on suicide reporting.
Method: A quantitative content analysis was conducted of 542 articles
from a selection of Norwegian newspapers from 2014 that mention
suicide.
Results: Suicide-related reporting in 2014 rarely described suicide
methods. Media reporting addressed more often suicide as s societal
problem and provided information about several risk factors. It was not,
however, particularly hopeful, nor provided information about help.
Conclusion: The suicide-related reporting in 2014 did comply with the
Norwegian Code of Ethics. The media are encouraged to provide more
hopeful content and more information about ways to seek help for a
more socially beneficial media reporting on suicide.
