This article reports on our experience in which patients contribute their own documentation to their health record. In this project, patients in an open psychiatric ward are given the opportunity to write their notes into their electronic health record during hospitalization. We seek to evaluate whether this process contributes something new in the interaction during hospitalization. However, there are technical, legal and ethical challenges that are important in the mental health field. This article poses the question of whether patient participation shaped as self-documentation should be formally researched as a new way of involving patients in treatment.
