Sammanfattning
Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME), post-viral fatigue or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
(CFS), is a disease with unknown etiology. ME/CFS is characterised
by pronounced mental and physical fatigue, cognitive impairments, sleep
disturbance, pain, autonomic and flu-like symptoms with post-exertional malaise.
ME/CFS can cause severe chronic disabilities and activity limitations.
ME/CFS has previously been questioned as a medical entity mainly due to
the lack of a clear understanding of the pathophysiology of ME/CFS and the
lack of biomarkers to support the diagnosis. There is now however a growing
international consenus among the medical scientific community concerning
the reality and seriousness of the disease. Initiatives are ongoing including
for example NIH exploring biological mechanisms in ME/CFS. Several pharmaceutical
clinical treatment trials are also ongoing. For the healthcare sector
it is important to use modern diagnostic criteria for ME/CFS, to assess
the patients thoroughly and to provide symptomatic treatment, rehabilitation
and support for patients with this often severely disabling disease.
