Sammanfattning
The aim of this article is to describe and analyze supporting school culture
and supported inclusion as two basic elements of sustainable education.
The ambition is to show what space for practices the educators have at their
disposal to provide all children with equal education, despite all interfering
contextual factors such as socio-economical and migration background and
housing and school segregation. Education is also one of the strongest social
determinants for individual health. Based on Swedish and international
research and my three reports to Malmö (one) and Stockholm (two) commissions
for socially sustainable development, I point out how the contextual
factors through categorizations and misrecognition have infiltrated and have
been allowed to dominate shaping of school cultures and conditions for students’
inclusion. Low expectations, unilateral focus on discipline, order and
tranquility as well as isolation and physical integration without support leads
to lower achievement. And that is possible and necessary to address.
