Sammanfattning

The paper describes three models of peer support in mental health services, and reviews the quantitative literature based on published reviews in the period of 1999-2015, especially reviews from 2011 to 2015. The results are summarized in three conclusions: Peer support (a) has the same effect as interventions carried out by professionals, (b) sometimes has a greater effect on certain outcomes, especially on the recipient’s sense of hope and self-experienced recovery, (c) does not lead to an enhanced effect on clinical outcomes, e.g. symptoms. The paper outlines the perspectives for future research.
