Sammanfattning
The author’s research on the situation of elderly immigrants in the health and care services in
Norway is reviewed, with a special focus on dementia and mental health. The methods used are
mainly qualitative with individual interviews and focus groups. Central results points to availability of
services and barriers to help seeking, individually adapted services, and cooperation between
caregiving from next of kin and formal services. A conclusion is that there is a great need of more
knowledge about dementia and mental health problems, and information on and availability of
services. To give service with dignity, the staff of health and care services need to know about the
elderly immigrants’ life histories, their habits and traditions, clarify expectations and facilitate
cooperation with the next of kin.
