Patients in antithrombotic therapy in dental practice: The number of patients receiving
antithrombotic therapy is increasing and the treatment covers anti-coagulant and anti-platelet drugs.
Treatment-related bleeding associated with oral surgery is considered expected in this patient group,
and a knowledge among dentists of the different anticoagulant and anti-platelet drugs, and local
haemostatics is assumed. The purpose of this article is to raise awareness of the different
antithrombotic drugs, focusing on the new anti-coagulant and anti-platelet drugs on the market, and
describe the precautions that should be taken in relation to oral surgery. In recent years, a new
series of anti-platelet and anti-coagulant drugs has been developed and commonly used; and the
knowledge of these new products related to oral surgery is limited. Pausing or changed intensity of
the antithrombotic preparations can increase the risk of thromboembolic complications, while
maintaining antithrombotic therapy can cause bleeding complications intra- and post-operatively.
Therefore, an individual assessment of the patient in antithrombotic therapy prior to oral surgery is
required and attention must be drawn to preoperative planning, perioperative control and
postoperative precautions.
