Sammanfattning
Management of oral antithrombotics in the dental surgery: As the average age of the general
population increases, more patients seeking dental treatment will be on antithrombotic medication.
The combination of an aging population and several concurrent and often chronic illnesses amongst
the elderly calls for an increased awareness by the dental practitioner when faced with
polypharmacy, including antithrombotic medication, prior to oral surgical procedures. New potent oral
medications are on the market for the management of cardiovascular diseases. Lack of awareness
by the dentist can increase the risk of haemorrhage. Current knowledge of the patient´s medication
and medical history is a must prior to dentoalveolar surgery. Mouth rinses with 5% tranexamic acid
is highly recommended to prevent and manage complications of bleeding as the treatment is safe,
well documented, and easy to use.
