Sammanfattning
Eating disorders are amongst the most serious diseases in younger
women. The prognosis is improved by early treatment. However,
early detection and treatment of these disorders is often compli-
cated by the fact that persons with an eating disorder have not yet
recognized or are trying to hide their disorder. Since oral complications
may be the only objective sign of an eating disorder, the dentist
may be the first health authority to suspect the presence of an eating
disorder in a patient. The conversation about a suspected eating disorder
may be difficult and the patient should be met with concern
and recognition – also when denying the eating disorder. Although,
the principal role of the dentist is to treat and prevent further oral
complications, the supportive role of the dentist may in term enable
the patient to talk about the disorder or recognize the need of help.
