Sammanfattning

The Incredible Years (IY) training series for parents, children, and teachers has been used in Norway since 1999. The total number of group leaders trained is approximately 1700, and the programs have been implemented in 130 municipalities. This paper describes these programs and examines the knowledge and theoretical foundations outlined by the program developer, Carolyn Webster-Stratton. The eight programs’ objectives encompass the prevention and treatment of behavioral problems. Such problems are best prevented by ensuring the sound development of children’s language skills as well as their emotional and social competence. Relational and attachment theory, together with social learning theory, developmental theory, and knowledge about group dynamics, forms the basis of the IY programs. The empirical support extended to the programs is briefly described. These programs have been criticized for being mechanistic and manipulative and for objectifying children. This critique, along with the programs’ limitations and challenges, is also being addressed in this article.
