Sammanfattning
Background: The importance of patient safety and
quality improvements in health care is given considerable
attention in both research and policy. The aim of
this study was to investigate patient safety attitudes
amongst health care providers in home health care.
Method: 160 home health care providers (28 %)
from six municipalities (16 units in total) in MidNorway
answered a short form of the Safety Attitudes
Questionnaire (SAQ) during 2015–2016. Data
was analysed by descriptive statistics, t-test, and
ANOVA, using SPSS.
Results: Proportions of units reporting a mature
Safety climate (i.e. at least 60 % of the respondents
in the unit scored ≥75) was 31.3%; while the proportions
reporting mature Teamwork climate were
68.8%. Mean scale scores (on a scale from 1 to 100)
for respondents were 72.3 on Safety climate, 79.1 on
Teamwork climate, and 79.1 on Perceptions of management.
Providers with the longest experience in
the workplace scored significantly higher both on
Safety climate and Teamwork climate, than providers
with shorter experience. On Perception of
management, the providers with lower education
scored significantly higher than providers with
higher education, and providers with longest experience
in the workplace scored significantly higher
than providers with shorter experience.
Conclusion: The study indicates that a considerable
proportion of home health care may have a
high risk for adverse events caused by immature
Safety- and/or Teamwork climate. There is a need
for more research on patient safety culture, and
patient safety attitudes amongst health care providers
in in home health care.
