Sammanfattning

That cultural experiences (visual art, dance, music, theatre and writing/reading/story telling) could be utilized more extensively in health care than at presently is supported in a rapidly growing scientific literature. Cultural experiences could induce strong emotional reactions with psychophysiological correlates. If these experiences are repeated regularly during long periods more long-lasting effects may be induced on regenerative hormonal systems and as a consequence on illness and health. Dance and song include to some extent the same components as regular physical exercise and singing training also has a strong element of breathing training. Cultural experiences are increasingly utilized in medical treatments such as during waking up after surgery, in treatment of depression, during medical care after stroke, in the aftercare after bone marrow transplantation in children and in treatment of chronic pain.
