Sammanfattning
There is now greater awareness of the influence of the care setting on health. This is evidenced by care programmes, national guidelines and standards that increasingly take into account factors in the physical environment which influence the standard of care.
There are now also an increasing number of research articles underlining the influence of architecture and design. One example of the new insights is the importance of an accessible, clearly defined, easily understood care setting, the value of privacy, and last but not least, a setting that is visually appealing and shows respect and regard for visitors. In order for new research evidence to benefit patients and staff, it must be implemented in practice.
One key precondition is dialogue between the representatives of care, architecture, design and culture, and for different inputs to be mutually complementary on the basis of a common vision regarding initiatives conducive to health and well-being. This article discusses how the different factors in the care setting influence each other and must thus be addressed in their mutual contexts.
