Sammanfattning
The article focuses on how elderly immigrants experience their situation regarding mental health problems and dementia. Results from two studies – one on aging women with immigrant backgrounds, and one on immigrants with dementia and their next of kin – are described and discussed in relation to previous research and national goals on equal access to services. The two projects show many similarities in terms of barriers to help seeking, including problem definition, degree of openness or taboos associated to dementia and mental health problems, and expectations of family care. Important system barriers in the public care agencies are insufficient information and individually adapted services for elderly immigrants and their families.
