Sammanfattning
How do clients and therapists reach shared notions about what they have accomplished through psychotherapy? This is a question about the dynamic between improvement and coming to an end. A reanalysis of a qualitative study of twelve processes of psychotherapy where clients and therapists negotiated and decided about ending demonstrated how improvements were co-constructions. Analyses of the interactions in the final phase of therapy brought attention to how recognizing improvements was linked to efforts to move towards a «good enough» ending. Looking ahead and looking back, the therapist and the client established different modes of development: Some clients had reached a new level in life, others regained capacities that had been lost and others came to terms with realities. Rather than counting for a specific outcome, the clients pointed out how they were able to deal with emotions and to face challenges in future relationships.
