Sammanfattning
Based on updated systematic reviews on the evidence relating
sugars to obesity and dental caries, the WHO has recently
released new guidelines for sugar intake in children and adults.
There is a strong recommendation that the intake of free sugars
should not exceed 10% of total energy per day, corresponding
to no more than 4 tablespoons. A further reduction in free
sugars intake to below 5% was conditionally recommended to
protect dental health throughout the life-course. Free sugars include
monosaccharides and disaccharides added to foods and
beverages by the manufacturer, cook or consumer, and sugars
naturally present in honey, syrups, fruit juices and fruit juice
concentrates. Embracing these guidelines, dental professionals
should work actively together with general health professionals to
reduce sugar intake in the general population as well as among
their individual patients.
